In partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO), SLAC Microelectronics holds monthly events focused on improving energy efficiency in computing. These include workshops, roadmap and planning meetings, as well as pledge signing events.
AMMTO Virtual Workshop Series: Semiconductor R&D for Energy Efficiency
From January 2021 to January 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Advanced Manufacturing & Materials Technologies Office hosted a series of four workshops focused on semiconductor R&D for energy efficiency.

DOE AMMTO Workshop Information
The DOE AMMTO Workshops on semiconductor research and development for energy efficiency focused on the lack of critical infrastructure in defense, power, transport, finance, communications, and healthcare, which cannot function without semiconductors.
Digital storage and computation underpin the success of nearly every modern industry. But, since 2010, semiconductor energy use has doubled every three years. By 2030, semiconductors could consume nearly 25% of planetary energy production. Semiconductor energy use is already a dominant source of carbon emissions for research itself in major areas supported by DOE. Hence innovation in semiconductor energy efficiency is essential for the economy, jobs, and to address the climate crisis.
The input gathered during this workshop series will help inform the research focus areas considered by AMO in fulfilling its mission to improve energy efficiency and decarbonize manufacturing industries significantly by 2030. The motto for technology transition for AMO’s RDD&D portfolio is “2030 or bust!”

The second and fourth workshops were in conjunction with the Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the third workshop was co-sponsored by the Department of Energy's Office of Science and the Semiconductor Research Corporation.
The first workshop in January 2021 focused on the potential of semiconductor-based sensor systems to increase manufacturers’ energy efficiency.
The second workshop focused on the manufacture of ultra-energy-efficient semiconductor devices.
The third workshop focused on improving device and manufacturing capabilities for analog and neuromorphic computing approaches.
The fourth workshop focussed on R&D opportunities to overcome key barriers to advanced packaging of three-dimensional microelectronics systems to increase their energy efficiency greatly.
